Ooops, I forgot to take off the shifter for the rear drive shaft. You need to pull the cotter pin in the shifter as well as using a screwdriver to twist out the nut. Inside you will find a spring and a ball. Remove the bolt and clip holding the shift rod in place.
I personally found it easiest to spray the ends with some penentrating lube and smack the rod forward a bit and then towards the rear by attaching a deep socket. The penentrating oil will break the rust as well act as lube to aid in removing the rod.
Reach in and pull out the fork. This is how the fork and rod go back together.
Remove the five bolts holding on name here. Notice where my rachet is? That particular bolt is the longest of the 5.
I had issues getting the Speedo gear out before the previous step, which made since, but the "name here" still came off. I pulled the speedo out to insure it wasn't damaged when I didn't take it out first.
I keep reading there is a thin preload shim and here it is. Flimsy and it feels like it would tear if you put much effort into trying to.
Behind it still on the shaft you see the gear that drives the speedo gear.
I placed a 2x4 behind the main gear and gave it a couple of wacks with a rubber mallet and it slid right out.
Make sure while you hitting the rear shaft towards the front of the case you align the small gear so you dont beat it against the inside of the case.
Guide the shaft out with everything attached.
I put everything back together for a shot so I remember how it all went together. The big gear you have to pull straight out from inside the case.
Heres more of an exploded view because I wanted to make sure I had everything pointed in the right direction. Notice the large nubs on the main gear? As well there is a washer behind the bearing that isn't visable in this picture. Also the metal race behind the speedo has the beveled edge pointing out.
Remove the bolt and the clip on the smaller gear set.
I sprayed the rod with a nice shot of penentrating lube and let it sit for a few minutes.
Wack the face of the rod with a rubber mallet.
There is a plug on the backside that will be knocked out when you hit the side with the clip on it.
After a few hits the plug fell out and I layed the nearly empty case on its side and used another socket that was just smaller than the rod with and extention to give me something to hammer on as I drove the rod down and out.
